How To Enjoy your Food and Be Healthy At The Same Time

     So I'm on line in the supermarket, and the guy in front of me keeps looking back at me. I'm thinking he's going to let me go ahead of him because he had a cart full of stuff, and I had a few things in my hands. Then he says, "You just blew your image." I said, "What?" He said, "You're blowing your image buying those chips and beer, I know you're a trainer at Desert Fitness." He was kidding a little but not really. Then he acknowledged what he was buying as he put his Oreo cookies and soda on the counter and gave me a sshh gesture with a smile. I said, "No I'm not, when you eat as well as I do, this stuff doesn't affect you." He kind of agreed but I knew he didn't understand.

First, I make it known that I have nothing to hide. I eat pizza, chips, cookies, popcorn, and I drink beer occasionally. The cookies are dairy and wheat free, and non-GMO, and everything else is all-natural with no hidden ingredients, except for the beer. These are the most unhealthy things I ingest - and that's if they are cooked. What I don't eat, is genetically modified organisms, pastuerized milk, bread or conventional meat. Conventional restaurant food, foods with MSG, yeast extract, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, fake vegetable oils, rancid oils, dyes or preservatives. I also don't take any prescription or non-prescription chemical medications of any kind, including antibiotics, aspirin or tylenol. I don't take chemical (synthetic) vitamins and minerals. I'm in the best shape of my life in every way. I'm fully aware of what I eat and why. I do things to be healthy other people don't do. Does this make me better? No, but it makes me healthier.

How could this guy make such a judgment about me? He probably was just making conversation, but he didn't understand how someone with my title could be buying these things and still be healthy. He didn't realize the huge difference between Oreo cookies with preservatives, chemicals, and high fructose corn syrup (which is probably also genetically modified), and my wheat and dairy free organic cookies. In this case, the details are what matter. Also remember this - when you don't have all the facts, you are judging, only to your detriment. When is it ever possible to have every single fact about a person or situation?

Most importantly, before anything else, health is a state of mind, and when you cultivate strong habits of health, the few unhealthy things most would consider unhealthy become insignificant. That's like someone saying to you, "If you spend that $100,000 then you're going to be poor," but they don't see the $10,000,000 you have in assets and the $10,000,000 you have in the bank. Being wealthy is a state of mind too, just like everything else. A great guy who I recently met said it best; "If you ask how much something is, then you can't afford it."

It's not the food really. It's you and your way of thinking. And when you start thinking differently, you will most likely make much better food choices.

  Muscle loss is not strictly a calorie issue like some medical doctors will say. Muscle loss or weight loss happens because of a sudden drop in the immune system. Stress on the body due to chemo and radiation further causes weight loss by putting the body in a catabolic state. In Bodybuilding we never want to go into a catabolic state for any reason, because growth stops. Some people will say, "Yes that is why chemo is done, to stop growth and the growth of the cancer." This is not logical. Cancer does not grow from the same things healthy cells grow from. Cancer thrives in an anaerobic environment and healthy cells thrive in an oxygen-rich environment. More on this in a minute. 

  The body is intelligent. Our hearts beat all by themselves. It does not need to be poisoned to heal. The solution to catabolism is to eat quality protein at every meal. The same goes for anyone who wants to heal and get healthy again. Eating more protein and eating more calories only solves one aspect of the problem. What's just as important is to strengthen the immune system. These solutions are equal and depend on each other for the best outcome possible. It is never one technique over the other unless both are doing the exact same job. This is the Holistic Approach. 

  With a decrease in the immune system's ability to protect the body, and no appetite, this condition is worse than the original condition that is trying to be fixed. The body must be built up in all ways, not be broken down more. Too much oxygen and not enough antioxidants can also attribute to cancer. And when we try to kill cancer or other conditions with chemo and radiation, they can adapt and spread. Plenty of people have experienced this. It is better to practice co-existence and be okay with the cancer. How can one tumor or even many tumors be more powerful than all the other resources of your otherwise healthy body? They can't. But if someone tells you they can and you think they know better than you, then beliefs can be powerful. The cancer should not even be the main focus. Actually it's the other healthy cells that are getting starved of nutrition and oxygen.   What you need know about stress is that your body does not know the difference between mental stress or physical stress. The physical stress that is necessary to eventually rebuild the body such as exercise, and the mental stress accumulated throughout the day from conflicts. This is why some people can get tired without doing any physical activity at all, it's all mental.

 I recently took a trip to New York. One of my clients whose main goal is to lose weight, has been stuck at a small plateau lately. At the same time I left, she went on vacation, and stopped working out. Our first session back, she looked great! I could tell she lost weight. In fact she lost 6 lbs in those 2 weeks by doing nothing but enjoying her vacation (taking away all the stress) and staying moderately active. Some things just need to be left alone and they work themselves out...

 So if you're feeling stressed in areas of your life, stop doing intense workouts for a little while. Give your body and mind a rest. Take a whole week off or even 2. Maybe even a month off, depending on when the last time you gave yourself a rest was. Then you will have a fresh start. Begin again with low intensity exercise or activities, while staying more mindful of your life as a whole. In order to grow and regenerate, you must have a solid foundation. You can only build as high as your foundation is deep.
